Suzie Johnson Named Teacher of the Year

Third grade teacher Suzie Johnson was recently chosen as 2017-18 JES Teacher of the Year. Read below for information about what makes Mrs. Johnson such a special part of JES! It is such a humbling experience to receive the nomination for teacher of the year by a group of people whom I value and respect. I feel very fortunate to share this nomination with such deserving educators. As long as I can remember I have wanted to be a teacher. I am living out the calling placed on my life many years ago. I consider it an awesome privilege to be a part of this profession. I began my professional career sixteen years ago working one-on-one as a special education paraprofessional at an elementary school with children who had challenges that no one should have to face. It was then that I realized the key to reaching and teaching children from ALL walks of life is building relationships, both with the students and their families. I strive to make all of my children feel accepted, safe and most of all, loved everyday! I truly believe that each child has a desire to learn but we, as educators, must tap into that desire and foster his/her individual abilities. I earned a Bachelors of Science degree in Elementary Education from Trevecca Nazarene University. While student teaching, I received the Student Teacher of the Year Award from the education department at TNU. Over the years, I have committed myself to stretch and grow as a teacher. My continued study of pedagogy, in and out of the state of Tennessee, has given me...
